What makes our Ameracaunas different:
Many people use the terms “Ameracauna” and “Easter Egger” interchangeably, which is not technically correct. True Amercaunas are a recognized breed - not a hybrid - that will always lay blue eggs. They also have cute muffs (which look like puffy cheeks)! Easter eggers, on the other hand, are not a standard, recognized breed. They are a mixed hybrid that can technically lay any egg color; you’re not guaranteed a blue egg at all. We only sell true Americaunas, from an excellent linage.
Why we love Ameracaunas:
BBS (black, blue, or splash) Ameraucanas not only lay some of the bluest eggs, but are a beautiful heritage breed that will lay much longer than a hybrid bird. They have pea combs, so they do extremely well in our climate - no worry about comb frostbite.
Ameracauna egg color:
True ameracaunas are guaranteed lay a clear, pure blue egg. Here’s a fun fact about blue eggs: They’re blue on the outside, and inside! Tan and brown eggs start as white, and the pigment is added to the outside of the shell later on in the process. Blue eggs are unique in that the pigment is added throughout the shell formation process, so they’re blue throughout!
Information about Ameraucanas:
Ameracaunas became an official breed of their own in 1984. They were bred from Araucanas, a Chilean breed of chicken that also lays blue eggs. The name Ameracaunas comes from the words Araucanas (the breed they originated from), and America (where these birds were bred).
